Why teacher wellbeing isn't a luxury — and never was

Ask any headteacher what keeps them awake at night and the honest answer is rarely budgets or inspections — it’s people. Tired people, stretched people, brilliant people running on empty.

At IntroTeach, wellbeing isn’t a page on a website. In 2017, before it became a conference buzzword, members of our team co-wrote Llwydda/Thrive, a wellbeing programme for headteachers that has since supported school leaders across Wales. We deliver whole-school wellbeing training, and we build the same thinking into how we treat our own supply teachers: fair pay on the published scale, honest communication, and no bookings that set someone up to fail.

The evidence is unambiguous — staff wellbeing is the strongest lever a school has on retention, and retention is the strongest lever on pupil outcomes. A school that looks after its adults keeps its adults; a school that keeps its adults keeps its expertise in the building.
